Affects: Computer Kit 2017 only
Updated: Jan 4 2018
We're super grateful for all the patience and support we've received while we worked on fixing a bug with the way your Computer Kit talks with your TV (original post here).
The great news is we've now released a hot-fix that will allow most TVs to be able to work with the Computer Kit. It doesn't take very long, and the guide below will show you how.
This fix will work for >95% of cases. If you are still having trouble after the hot-fix, read the section at the bottom of this guide.
With your Computer Kit powered down, slide the micro card out of the back:
Now slide the micro card into the black adapter that came in the box:
Great! Next, insert the card into the memory card reader on your laptop or desktop computer.
Download & Install
We'll use a program called Etcher to write the software to the memory card. The website will automatically choose the right version for your computer:
Next, we'll get the hot-fixed version of Kano OS:
The download for Kano OS is quite big, so while it's doing that, go ahead and open the the Etcher file and follow the on-screen instructions to install and run it.
Note: only use the link to Kano OS provided in this guide. Others may not work.
Re-Install Kano OS
Open the Etcher program you installed a little earlier on. Click Select image:
Select the file you downloaded and click 'Open'.
Select the Kano OS file you downloaded and click Open:
The program should automatically detect your memory card and select it. If it has chosen the wrong one, just click the Change button to select the correct card (it should be 7.9 GB in size):
You're ready to go! Click Flash! (The computer may need your permission to access the memory card). It should take between 10-15 minutes to complete:
Etcher will have ejected your card. Now just remove the SD card from your big computer and pop the little microSD card back in your Kano!
Time to Start
You're ready to try the hot-fix! You'll need to do a few things in a short space of time, so read all of this section first before trying it.
Switch on your keyboard so that the green light is blinking slowly.
Plug in the red power cable and turn on your Computer Kit. When the LED on the keyboard stops blinking, wait for 5 seconds.
Press and hold the Ctrl and Alt keys at the bottom left of the keyboard:
Keep them held down for about 60 seconds. Your computer may restart several times during this step.
You should now have an image on your screen! Once you've finished setting up the computer, click on the Settings icon in the bottom-right of the dashboard:
Click on Display:
Here you'll see your screen's preferred resolution in grey at the top. Select a resolution from the dropdown that matches this. If you see more than one, we suggest choosing 60 Hz as this is compatible with most screens:
Click Apply Changes and reboot! Your screen will now work at the right resolution for your TV. If it still doesn't look right, repeat the steps from Time to Start section.
We might need to look at your screen in more detail to help find the best settings. We'd love to troubleshoot with you at a time when you're with your Computer Kit and TV. Just submit your request.
